Before you perform a hard reboot by flicking off the switch, here are a few tips to enable the system to cleanly recover or reboot. These are all assuming that the system is still responsive.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Restart Windows Explorer<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Windows taskbar is actually handled by an instance of Windows Explorer. To launch a new instance, the following may be done:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Press \u201cAlt+Tab\u201d to cycle to an open command terminal. Execute the command \u201cexplorer\u201d from there.<\/li>\n<li>Press \u201cCtrl+Alt+Delete\u201d and press the \u201cTask Manager\u201d button to launch the task manager. Navigate to the Applications tab and use the \u201cNew Task\u2026\u201d button to execute the \u201cexplorer\u201d command.<\/li>\n<table style=\"width:auto;\">\n<tr>\n<td><a href=\"http:\/\/picasaweb.google.com\/lh\/photo\/MwBkELH2DxtfhLO_CoB-tw?feat=embedwebsite\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/-ssMDtQjNidk\/S18D3YdfyeI\/AAAAAAAAEEk\/EhRAKk10kPI\/s400\/wtaskmgr.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If the mouse is also not responsive, you can use the \u201cTab\u201d button to navigate the controls in the dialog windows.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Restart Windows<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>If the new Windows Explorer instance also refuses to function, a soft boot of the operating system would be in order. Since the \u201cStart->Logoff\u201d  menu will also be inaccessible, try using the shutdown command to restart the machine.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Press \u201cAlt+Tab\u201d to cycle to an open command terminal. Execute the command \u201cshutdown -r\u201d from there.<\/li>\n<li>Press \u201cCtrl+Alt+Delete\u201d and press the \u201cTask Manager\u201d button to launch the task manager. Navigate to the Applications tab and use the \u201cNew Task\u2026\u201d button to execute the \u201cshutdown -r\u201d command.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The shutdown command also has a graphical interface if you prefer to use a Window to shutdown a window. Invoke the command \u201cshutdown \u2013i\u201d to launch the GUI.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/-IjYqvCW4BAM\/SvpQKwQbjlI\/AAAAAAAAEEo\/FRqr-z1GQPA\/s400\/shutdowni.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>If all else fails<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>A hard boot is the only remaining option. Try pressing and holding the power-off button for a few seconds to invoke the motherboard\u2019s power-down feature.
