Dr. Oz 3-day Detox Plan

This 3-day detox diet is intended to consume a lot of whole foods while minimizing the artificial preservatives and processed food. The diet is basically a smoothie regimen with supplements. The combination is intended to assist in cleansing the body from bad stuff that has accumulated over a long period of non-healthy living. The cleanse is not expected to be total but should be treated as a giving the body a chance to rest and recuperate.

Caveat that critics of this diet has stressed that there are no proven scientific basis for the detox claims, and that the liver is more than enough to handle the detoxification needs of the body. Most however agree that there is no negative impact on the body. One of the prominent criticism is the plan’s lack of protein which attributes any weight loss to muscle loss. There was a page I read through that advised taking in 10 grams of protein each day to compensate. The diet is also expected to cause headaches, low energy and irritability. Take note of these items when deciding to go through this detox diet.

The diet’s one-page cheat sheet is found in this page but replicated here for archival and annotation purposes.

Unofficial Philippines Substitutions

The above plan is geared towards an American audience thus locally procuring some of the required items proved to be a challenge. My take in cooking and dieting is that as long as the general principle is followed then we should be able to maximize whatever benefits is aimed at even if there are some substitutions. Some of the replacements take into consideration the nutritional articles I found in the Internet and some personal dietary restrictions. 🙂

Substitutions and Alterations

  • Flax seed is replaced with the milled variety. Milled flaxseed is available from either the Healthy Options stores or from a lot of OLX sellers.
  • Raspberries were replaced with 100% Raspberry juice.
  • Bananas are of the lakatan variety which is smaller. I used a 2:1 ratio to also cover the fiber loss from not using the raspberry fruit.
  • Peanut butter is used to replaced almond butter.
  • Kale is replaced by a mixture of spinach, young camote tops, kangkong leaves and malunggay (moringga). It tastes tolerably awful but, as of writing, I dont know how kale tastes like so no loss there.
  • Lime juice is replaced with calamansi juice.
  • Coconut oil is expensive and I wont be using it after the detox so I replaced it with Olive oil that is available in our house. Olive oil looks like a healthier option based on comparison results.
  • Soy milk replaced almond milk.
  • Blueberries were replaced with blueberry yogurt. Its not the same but having the blueberry taste in the evening drink turned out to be my SALVATION.
  • Yakult cultured milk was used as the probiotic supplement. One was taken in the morning and one in the afternoon.

Aside from the replacements, I also didn’t halve my multivitamin dosage but took the capsule in the morning. I didn’t have any Epsom salt either and we only have a shower so the detox ultra bath was not an option. On the second day I actually ate 10 grams of cheese because I read about the protein concern, and I was so hungry and irritable because I didnt have any blueberry yoghurt on the second day and the drink was a torture to finish. 🙁

To make the lunch drink go down smoothly I would recommend chopping the celery stalks in very small pieces. If access to a food processor is available then use it on the celery. Adding ice on each drink also helps although freezing the fruits should also have the same effect.
